Eva Hartigan

Mother Nature

is angry
she is in my kitchen
i am feeding her slices of
orange and garlic
pig fat and plum

because she is family
that is what’s done

Mother Nature
is tired
she is in my living room
reclines on the floor
i fashion friendship bracelets
of coral, pour mushroom wine
and draw the blinds before

i can’t remember her face,
unflinching like my

roommate or grandmother
drug-dealer or waiter
professor or sister

Mother Nature
is infirm
she is in my bathroom
i am combing her armpits with an antler
i am drawing her a bath with sprigs of lavender
i am calling up hospice to send someone over

that is what’s done

“life-making don’t get
too much respect,” i say
then we are laughing
until we are
numb
