sunk costs

Esther Balaban

I waded in the field
where my lover and I once met and drowned in the
taller grass.

When the soil wasn’t as deep and the pain
wasn’t as wet, we used to float together, Dance
above the surface.

But we both understood That too much
depth
Damned the drowned.

Esther Balaban was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is a second-year English and European Cultural Studies major with Russian and Comparative Literature minors. Her poetry is inspired by life experiences, physical sensations, and the subtle beauty of the world around her.
