The oldest priest in our church died last week,
Mom said. He used to call me Bright.
“What your name means in Ireland,”
he would say, looking at me all
deep. Behind one closed door
he called me pretty. Said Jesus was
my friend if I would just let him
inside me. I hope he died
the same way a cockroach does:
on its back, legs in the air.
